Detached house Hohen Neuendorf
Conversion and extension, modernisation, lightweight construction
The residential house, built in the 1930s, is located in the town of Hohen Neuendorf in the district of Oberhavel in the northern suburbs of Berlin. bfstudio Partnerschaft von Architekten mbB Benita Braun-Feldweg & Matthias Muffert, Berlin, was commissioned to convert and extend the single-family house back in the late 1990s. Planning permission was first granted in 1999, but the building owners did not go ahead with the project. It was not until 2021, when the client confirmed her move to Berlin for personal reasons, that she again commissioned bfstudio with the architectural services. The new building permit was granted in the same year and the construction site was set up in April 2022. Completion is planned for autumn 2022.
The building project envisages a comprehensive extension in lightweight construction (timber support structure) as well as a fundamental modernisation of the existing building from the 1930s. The focus is on creating a harmonious interplay between the existing and new buildings, including the furnishings and fittings, thus creating a continuity of spatial feeling from the existing building into the new building. The design of the joint and the “inner façade” of the existing building play a particularly important role.
